DIY Mold Test With No Kit: Household Cotton Swab + Lab Report
DIY Mold Test With No Kit: Household Cotton Swab + Lab Report

You can start a mold test tonight without waiting for a box. Total Testing is a mail-in surface test: swab the stain with an unused household cotton swab, ship it with a prepaid FedEx label, and get an inspector-reviewed lab report that names species and growth level on that surface. There is no physical kit to unpack.
This is a screening tool for the areas you sample. It is not an on-site licensed inspection, not an air test, and not a medical diagnosis. Do not scrape or wipe the growth yourself. Disturbing mold can release spores. Share the report with a qualified mold remediation professional when you need cleanup.
The working rule is Test Before You Guess.
What you need at home
- Unused cotton swabs (one per sample location)
- Clean zip bags
- A marker to label room and date
- A printer for the prepaid FedEx label and PDF chain of custody
After checkout you download those files from email or total-testing-diy.com. Step-by-step photos: how to collect a surface mold sample.
How the no-kit test works
- Choose Spot Check (2 samples), Extended (4), or Full House (6).
- Download the PDF chain of custody and prepaid FedEx label.
- Turn off nearby fans. Roll a clean swab across the visible stain. Seal and label the bag. Do not scrape the growth.
- Pack the bags with the completed form. Drop at FedEx.
- View the inspector-reviewed lab report in the portal 24–48 business hours after the lab receives the samples.
Packages

| Full House | 6 | 24 business hours | $270 |
Every package includes accredited lab analysis, the PDF chain of custody, and prepaid FedEx shipping. Compare the three on packages.
What the lab report is — and is not
The report identifies mold on the surfaces you swabbed. The EPA notes there are no federal mold limits, so a swab cannot prove a house “passes” a government standard. The CDC does not recommend home testing as a way to predict who will get sick.
Visible growth is still a reason to swab when you need a written record for a landlord or buyer, or a species ID before you hire remediation. Read do I need to test if I can already see it? and how to test for mold in your house.

A clean zip bag, a marker, and a printer for the label and chain of custody PDF.
